Launching our Spring Music Festival, the contemporary setting of the Wessex Building provided the perfect backdrop, as over 20 of the School's most accomplished musicians and vocalists took to the stage for our annual Wessex Soloists' Concert.
Technically assured, but also displaying great energy and passion, their performances delighted listeners and, attired in concert dress, the pupils looked every bit the professionals as they took to the stage with great aplomb.
The rich and varied programme featured some particularly advanced repertoire. While still only in Year 9, Ryan Cheung confidently took his seat at the stunning Kawai grand to open the evening with Tchaikovsky’s ‘Nocturne, Op. 10, No. 1’ and was immediately followed by Year 12 pupil, Dillon Hodge, who played his French horn with great sensitivity to deliver a mesmerising performance of York Bowen’s ‘Moderato Espressivo: 1st movement from Horn Sonata in E flat, Op. 101’. Showcasing some fabulous string and woodwind performances throughout, Year 12 pupil, Emma Hocking brought the evening to a close with her captivating vocal performance of Gluck’s ‘Che Faro Senza Euridice’.
As always, our gratitude goes to Mr Hutchings, our accompanist and performance coach who, so sensitively, worked with the pupils to allow them to perform to the very best of their ability.
