Soloists' Shine at the Holburne Music Concert

Earlier this week the Brownsword Gallery at the Holburne Museum, Bath played host to some of the School’s most senior musicians and vocalists for the annual Holburne Soloists’ Concert.

Forming part of the School’s Spring Music Festival, the concert witnessed some outstanding performances by our pupils, in a programme that both delighted and entertained.

Many of the pupils performed pieces that they have been working on for their Grade 8 exams and beyond. Two of the School’s top ensembles also worked together to perform pieces for the evening, with the String Quartet taking audience members back to the Classical period with their performance of Mozart’s Divertimento in F, and the Cello Trio bringing the audience forward in time with Popper’s Requiem for 3 Cellos.  The evening also saw a Cello and Clarinet duet, which Emma Jones and Lauren Dalbooth put together and rehearsed themselves. 

Performers ranged in age group from Year 8 to Year 13 and all drew upon their experiences of musical life at King Edward’s.  For example, Jemima Millar performed Sonata for Oboe by Saint-Saëns, which she was coached through by Martin Gatt at the Music department’s annual Woodwind Masterclass.

Commenting on the evening, Head of Music, Rupert Drury said: “Many congratulations to the soloists and ensembles that performed at last night’s concert at the Holburne Museuem.  The audience was bowled over by the great technical skills, commitment and expressive control on display by our young performers.  It was surely our most thrilling Holburne Concert yet!”
