Sports Round-up

It’s been a busy couple of weeks for KES sport, with some noteworthy results across the term’s major sports.

In Boys’ hockey the 1st XI beat Clayesmore in the National Cup, setting up second round match against Cheltenham College, which they won 2-0.  In the same competition the U16 team beat Millfield 7-2 and will play Dean Close in the next round.

In other hockey news the U13A boys’ team recently finished as runners-up in the English School Cup Tier 2 County Round, thereby qualifying for the Regional Final at King’s Taunton on 28th March.

In this weekend’s block fixtures against Clifton College and Clifton Prep KES squads won 5, drew 1 and lost 4, with the 1st and 2nd XI winning both their matches (4-1 and 8-0), whilst lower down in the school the U13 teams were in form, with the U13A team winning 9-0 and the U13B team winning 1-0.

In netball, midweek matches against The Royal High School saw two wins, with the U14 teams scoring 41 goals in total. Moving venues, the U15A squad also put in a strong performance to record a 30-5 win against St Mary’s Calne.

The weekend saw a block fixture against Bristol Grammar School.  Always a highly competitive encounter, an impressive 16 teams were in action.  Senior squads enjoyed a run of good results, with the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th teams winning all their matches.

A highlight for netball players this week was meeting England Netball player, Serena Guthrie, who spent the day at school on Tuesday, undertaking coaching masterclasses with pupils from Year 5 up to the most senior squads.

The rugby 7s season is now in full flow, with the U13s enjoying a superb day at Port Regis 7s recently, beating Millfield, Clayesmore and The Downs. This meant they qualified for the main cup where they lost narrowly to a strong Caldicott side. They eventually came third after defeating Sherborne in the 3rd/4th playoff. 

In the same tournament the U12s beat Port Regis, The Downs and Blundell’s to finish top of their group and then beat Millfield and Caldicott to win the Cup which was a huge achievement!

Following this, the U13s had a fantastic tournament at Clayesmore where they topped their group beating Walhampton, Sherborne Prep, All Hallows, Farleigh and Beechen Cliff along the way. Next up in the semi-final was Monkton Prep who they beat 25-0. In the final, another superb defensive display saw them out score Cothill 20-10.

Onwards to the Millfield Prep 7s competition at the weekend, where the U13s continued their good form, finishing runners-up in the plate competition.

7s teams now have the Rosslyn Park 7s tournament in their sights, which kicks off on 25 March.

In news off the pitch, the school was delighted to hear that Max Ojomoh has been selected for the U18 England squad to play against France on 24 March.  Commenting on his selection, Andy Rock, Bath Academy Manager said:  “Max Ojomoh’s selection for the France game on Sunday March 24th is a clear indication of how much he has developed over the past 12-18 months. Max is really beginning to fulfil his potential as a player, and has learnt a lot about himself and about the game during his U17 and U18 years with us here at the club. For King Edward's School and for Craig Lilley who leads the Rugby programme at the school it will be huge reward for the support they have given Max. King Edward's have been incredible to work with over this past two years in support of Max’s development and they have always put his interests first, which has helped us all to maximise opportunities to provide Max the right things at the right time to aid his development. It’s been one of the best examples I have ever experienced of working in partnership with a School to support a high potential player in both their sporting ambitions and their education."
