Fundraising Whole School

Dr John Wroughton played a pivotal role in the life of King Edward’s School during his long career as Head of History, Second Master and Headmaster. Always mindful of his own journey through school and university, Dr Wroughton was passionate about giving those same life-changing opportunities to others and providing every child with access to a first class education. This was evident in John’s deep commitment to supporting the School’s Bursary Programme, which continued throughout his retirement. The Wroughton Lecture series, which he established in 2001, has raised more than £30,000 for the Bursary Programme and continues to this day.

The School has set up the Wroughton Bursary Fund in John’s memory to award transformative bursaries to those young people most in need to enable them to attend King Edward’s, regardless of their financial circumstances. Pupils like Martin, one of our 2023 leavers who has gone on to study Biochemistry at the University of Bristol.

“My experiences as a bursary award holder have shaped my life as it is. Without the top quality support I have received from KES academically, pastorally and within sport, I don’t even know what I’d be doing! The award has allowed me to not be held back by finances and be able to access a high-level education so I can make the most of my academic talent through the teaching offered at KES. After my degree, my ultimate goal is to study medicine, and train to become a doctor and give back to the world.” - Martin Mora, Bursary recipient. Class of 2023
