Junior School STEM

The Junior School DT department recently bought a Goblin kit car, a small electric vehicle that a club of Year 6 children are currently assembling from scratch. We have built the chassis, seat and steering column, and at the time of writing are attaching the steerable front axle and the 24-volt motor driven rear axle. Children are learning teamwork, how to read expanded diagrams, and what a ratchet spanner is! Everyone is looking forward to the time when we can take it out onto the playground for its first test run.

The Goblin has been created by the Greenpower Education Trust as a way of promoting sustainable technology and engineering skills. Over the year, they run a series of IET Formula race days, and we hope to enter our yet unnamed vehicle into a race in 2023. As well as drag races, there are slalom events and even a pit-stop challenge.

The Goblin can be dismantled and rebuilt each year by a new group of children, so we hope this is just the start of the Junior School racing team.
