Safety Week at the Pre-prep and Nursery

Looking after the children’s well-being and their safety is of paramount concern for all members of the KES staff. Earlier on this term, the Pre-Prep embarked on an exciting programme of fun activities that helped the children to think about road safety, fire safety, e-safety and personal physical safety.

The week-long programme was organised by Mrs Carter as part of the Personal, Social & Health Education provision.

Safety Week commenced with a visit from PC Louise Williams of Avon and Somerset Police. PC Williams was great fun and came laden with a huge amount of educational kit which included a mini zebra crossing. The children thoroughly enjoyed themselves as they pushed on their crash helmets and mounted their vehicles (in the form of balance bikes and tricycles) and learnt how to wear protective clothing for the dark mornings and after-school times and how to THINK! carefully before crossing the road.

PC Williams’ visit was then reinforced by the arrival of firefighters from Avon Fire and Rescue. The firefighters are regular visitors to the Pre-Prep and they have become real friends with our school community. This year, they turned up with their ‘ELF’ box (Early Learning Fire safety) which is filled to the brim with puzzles, picture cards and dressing-up costumes to help the children learn the importance of fire safety and how to operate the 999-emergency phone number.

E-Safety is a hugely important area for everybody in society today and as children from pre-school upwards are increasingly becoming more proficient users of information technology, it has become extremely important that even our youngest learners are taught the basics of keeping themselves safe from harm when using computers. To help the Pre-Prep staff tackle this area of the children’s learning, they enlisted the support of Smartie the Penguin, which is a computerised cartoon character who can talk to the children about the “smart” way to have fun with technology.
