Earlier this week 29 children from Year 5 and 6 took to the stage at the egg theatre in Bath to perform an exhilarating production of Macbeth as part of the Shakespeare Schools Foundation (SSF) Festival - the world's largest youth drama festival.

With just two short months to rehearse the young cast quickly united to form a band of players, supporting each other through their various roles, whether on stage as actors or as part of the technical team in control of lighting or sound.

In addition to their weekly rehearsals and the performance itself, the cast and crew also attended a workshop at the egg, directed by theatre professionals from the Foundation. SSF worked with the whole company to develop the performance, giving tips and tricks to take back into the rehearsal room.

On the day of the performance, the children spent half a day at the theatre in a technical and dress rehearsal, ensuring everyone felt ready and supported for the evening to come. Then, in a celebratory finale to their Festival journey, the KES company joined another local school as the children shared their hard work and success with parents and the local community.

The Junior School performance was led by Mrs Heaney, head of English and Drama and Mrs Alice White, a professional actress and mother at the School. The children incorporated a theme of 'super heroes and villains' into their production, an idea from Mrs White, making the dark story of Macbeth more relatable for the children. Their characters were further enhanced by costumes, designed by the children themselves, but cleverly created by fellow staff colleague, Mrs Jabarin.

The evening performance was a resounding success. Well done everyone!
