Wow, what a busy and fantastic Science Week it has been in the Junior School! We have had so many exciting opportunities to find out about space, rockets and astronauts in so many of our lessons this week. Lenny and Cedric, from the lockdown maths lessons, shared a video of their trip to space this week – good luck on your mission! Year 4 have been exploring sound to support our astronauts uses of communication, Year 5 have looked at how forces affect space travel, and Year 6 have been focusing on the electrical elements to make circuits work – those astronauts need to be able to fix circuits in space!

We also had two teams, consisting of 8 children in total, from Year 5 and 6 take part in the National Inter-School Championships for Science on Thursday. To say that we were all on the edge of our seat would be an understatement! What a fantastic and challenging quiz it was for both year groups, with the opportunity to learn lots and work as a team to decide on their answers to a range of 30 scientific questions. Here are a few examples:

  • Which Apollo mission took the first men to the Moon in 1960?
  • If the temperature is low enough, every know substance except one becomes a solid. What is the one that doesn’t solidify?
  • What do we call atoms of the same element, with the same atomic number, but with different mass?

Well done to all of the teams for taking part and doing so well in what was a very challenging quiz. One Team from Year 5, who came 2nd, and one Year 6 team, who came 3rd, have made it through to the National Finals to represent KEJS – congratulations!

Thank you also to everyone to has joined in with our school challenge to help Tim Peake reach the International Space Station above Earth. We have had so many entries from everyone that Tim made it safely to the ISS just before the end of the week!
