Being passionate about looking after the environment and protecting the planet is at the heart of Junior School endeavours.  From Eco Days to Science Week and developing the wild area at school to encourage more wildlife, to building a greenhouse using recycled plastic bottles, environmental awareness and action is embedded within the Junior School curriculum and co-curricular activities.

This term, to coincide with a heightened awareness of environmental issues, due in part to COP26 and the recent Earthshot Prize, the Junior School is running a two-week environmental campaign designed to engage the entire school community.

Multiple activities are planned throughout the 14 days to encourage environmental action and change.  Example initiatives include:

  • Hosting a COP26 assembly led by our Eco Warrior champions
  • Asking the entire Junior School community to contribute to a film where everyone will be asked, ‘What Change Do You Want to See in the World by 2071?
  • Encouraging children to apply for a Blue Peter Green badge by making 3 pledges associated with reducing plastic, saving energy and planting pollinators – and acting on these pledges for the next 2 weeks
  • Humanities lessons during the fortnight will focus on climate change and COP26 with display boards around the school showing the resulting classroom work
  • The Junior School will also launch its ‘Plant for the Planet’ campaign after receiving 130 samplings from The Woodland Trust. Junior School families will be encouraged to take these home and plant them in a suitable location, in return for a £2 donation to the Trust
  • Eco Warrior pupils will also lead classroom discussions to explain the Earthshot Prize’s five ‘Earthshots’ which aim to protect & restore nature, clean our air, revive our oceans, build a waste-free world and fix our climate.  As part of raising awareness of the Prize’s five ambitions, a display will go up in the Dining Hall to encourage everyone to add their own ideas on how best to support the five Earthshots
  • In addition, during the fortnight both the Gardening and Eco Clubs will continue to undertake eco led discussions and activities.
  • Immediately after the environmental fortnight, Junior School pupils are then set to meet with the Senior Management Team at KES to present their ideas on how to improve things here at School, and to find out more about what the School does already to protect its environment - from waste disposal to managing wildlife habitats on site.
