Since taking part in the area heat of the National Science Championships in March, the Junior School’s Year 5 & 6 teams have been working extremely hard, practising weekly on a range of different science topics, from the curriculum of Year 3 all the way up to Year 8! This has involved them doing extra reading and research at home.
On the day of the Final last week, the children performed extremely well, in what was a challenging and enjoyable event. They worked really well as a team and Mr Carter, the Junior School’s Science Co-Ordinator, was impressed by the discussion the children had, narrowing down the choices within each question and negotiating to confirm their final answer.
Example questions from the Quiz Final included:
• What type of joint is the hip?
• What branch of science deals with nature and how things work at an atomic and sub-atomic level?
• What is a metal made from two or more elements called?
After all the points were confirmed at the end, the Year 5 team were delighted to find out that they had come 11th out of 23 teams across the country!
The Year 6 Team were outstanding throughout the quiz, being 2nd and 3rd for the majority of the competition, before finally securing 4th place and only 20 points away from third place!
To all our teams, a huge congratulations for your effort, time, and enthusiasm.
We are already looking forward to next year’s competition!
